Neolitic Farming (about 5,000 years ago)
The Neolithic revolution began when people started to practice farming. The site of the Meadow would have been rich in woodland due to the presence of the fertile clay soils over free draining chalk. Down in the river valley Salix and Alder species would have provided cover for all sorts of wetland wildlife. This rich habitat would have supported sizeable populations combining hunting with agriculture. People also learned to tame animals in order to obtain food easier.
People started to develop new technologies to have more successful harvests: Farmers needed to measure time accurately so they would know when to plant and harvest. This is when they created the first calendars.
